Pharmacy First is an NHS-funded service that lets trained pharmacists assess and treat certain common conditions directly. No GP referral needed. No waiting days for an appointment.
It launched nationally in January 2024. For eligible conditions, your pharmacist can supply prescription-only medicines on the spot. That includes antibiotics where clinically appropriate.
Think of it as your first port of call for minor but disruptive health problems. It also helps free up GP appointments for patients with more complex needs.
The service covers seven specific clinical pathways. Each one has defined criteria, so your pharmacist will ask a few targeted questions before recommending treatment.
Most sore throats are viral and clear up without antibiotics. But some bacterial throat infections do need treatment. We use the FeverPAIN or Centor scoring system to work out which.
If your score suggests a bacterial cause, we can supply antibiotics directly under the Pharmacy First scheme. You do not need to see a GP first. This service is available for patients aged 5 and over.
Earache in children is one of the most common reasons parents end up at an emergency GP appointment. Under Pharmacy First, we can assess and treat ear pain for children aged 1 to 17.
We check for signs of acute otitis media. Where appropriate, we can supply antibiotics or advise on safe pain relief. Parents often tell us this service alone has saved them hours of worry.
Facial pain, blocked nose, pressure behind the eyes. Sinusitis is miserable, and most cases are viral. That means antibiotics will not help for the first ten days or so.
If symptoms have lasted over ten days and show no sign of improving, that changes things. We can assess whether a short course of antibiotics is clinically appropriate. This pathway is for adults and children aged 12 and over.
An insect bite that is spreading, warm to the touch, or producing pus may be infected. Left untreated, skin infections can worsen quickly.
We assess the bite site and the extent of any cellulitis. If it meets the clinical criteria, we can supply antibiotics under Pharmacy First. This applies to patients aged 1 and over.
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection. It spreads fast in households and schools, particularly among young children. Catching it early makes a real difference.
We can identify impetigo in most cases based on the clinical presentation and supply appropriate treatment under the Pharmacy First pathway.
Shingles cause a painful rash, often on one side of the torso or face. Antiviral treatment works best when started early, ideally within 72 hours of the rash appearing.
If you recognise the symptoms, do not wait for a GP appointment. Come straight to us. We can assess and supply antivirals for eligible patients aged 18 and over under the Pharmacy First scheme.
Think you have a UTI? Women aged 16–64 no longer need a GP. Visit our pharmacy for a quick, expert assessment and same-day treatment, no appointment necessary.
We carry out a brief clinical assessment and can supply a course of antibiotics where appropriate. Complicated UTIs, recurrent infections, or symptoms in men are outside this pathway and will need a GP review.
Pharmacy First covers the seven NHS pathways above. But our team also helps with a wider range of minor ailments that do not need a GP visit.
This includes hay fever, cold sores, athlete’s foot, mild eczema flares, and general advice on over-the-counter pain relief. Many of these can be sorted in a short consultation at the pharmacy counter.
If something falls outside what we can treat, we will tell you clearly and point you in the right direction.
You can walk in without an appointment. You can also book ahead if you prefer, especially for conditions like shingles where time matters.
There is no referral needed from your GP. You do not need to be registered with a specific GP surgery in Peterborough. The service is open to anyone who meets the clinical criteria.
If NHS 111 directs you to a pharmacy for one of these conditions, they may send a referral through to us directly.
Call us, walk in, or book online. For time-sensitive conditions like shingles, please come in as soon as symptoms appear. Early treatment gives much better results.
Your consultation takes place in our private consultation room. Your pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any medicines you currently take.
This is a clinical assessment, not a general chat. We follow the NHS clinical pathways and use validated scoring tools where required.
If you meet the criteria, we supply your treatment before you leave. No waiting for a prescription to be sent to a GP, no second trip to another pharmacy.
If your condition needs a GP or another service, we will explain why and help you get there.
We have delivered NHS Pharmacy First since the service launched in 2024. Our pharmacists have completed full NHS clinical training for all seven pathways.
Appointments are often available the same day. Our private consultation room means you can speak openly without being overheard at the counter.
We keep your GP in the loop automatically. After every Pharmacy First consultation, a summary is sent to your registered GP practice so your records stay up to date.
