Trained pharmacists can assess your suitability and supply certain contraceptive pills on the NHS. The service is free for eligible patients across England.
It was introduced to make contraception easier to access, particularly for people who struggle to get GP appointments. If you live in Peterborough, you may be able to use this service right here at Landsdowne Pharmacy.
Note: The contraceptive pill service is available to eligible patients aged 16 and over. Free emergency contraception eligibility may vary by age
We offer two core services under this programme. Here is what we can help you with.
We can assess and supply the combined pill and the progestogen-only (mini) pill. This is available free of charge through the NHS Pharmacy Contraceptive Service if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Whether you are starting for the first time or continuing an existing prescription, our pharmacist will carry out a short consultation. We check your medical history and blood pressure before supplying anything. It takes around 15 to 20 minutes.
If you need emergency contraception, we can help quickly. We supply levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) emergency contraception. Free emergency contraception may be available through locally commissioned NHS services, depending on your age and circumstances.
Emergency contraception is also available to purchase privately. Our pharmacist will advise on the most suitable option.
Eligibility depends on the type of contraception and your personal health history. For the contraceptive pill service, you generally need to be aged 16 or over and registered with a GP in England.
Free emergency contraception through the NHS is typically available to people aged 24 and under in many areas. Some ICB-funded local schemes also cover adults over 24, so it is worth checking directly with us.
You will not be eligible if certain medical conditions make hormonal contraception unsuitable for you. Our pharmacist will assess this during your consultation.
You can walk in, call us, or book an appointment online. There is no GP referral required.
