Why Do You Need a Flu Vaccination?

Flu is not just a bad cold. It is a serious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. For most healthy adults, it means a week in bed. For older people, young children, and those with long-term health conditions, it can mean hospital.

The NHS recommends annual vaccination because flu strains change each year. Last year’s jab may not protect you this winter. Getting vaccinated yearly is the only reliable way to stay covered.

Vaccination also protects those around you. If you work with elderly relatives, young children, or immunocompromised people, getting jabbed reduces the chance you pass it on.

How Do I Know If I Have the Flu?

Flu symptoms tend to come on fast, usually within a few hours. A cold comes on gradually. That is one of the key differences.

Common flu symptoms include:

If you are unsure whether it is the flu or a cold, our pharmacists can advise you. But the better approach is to get vaccinated before symptoms appear.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Landsdowne Pharmacy For Flu Vaccination?

How It Works

How the Treatmen Works

[Step 01]

Book an Appointment

You can book online through our website or call the pharmacy directly. Walk-in slots may also be available, but we recommend booking ahead to guarantee your preferred time.

[Step 02]

Attend Your Consultation

When you arrive, a pharmacist will ask you a few short questions. This is a standard clinical check to confirm the vaccination is right for you. It takes two to three minutes.

[Step 03]

Receive Treatment

The injection itself takes seconds. We use a fine needle and the process is largely painless. You will be asked to wait briefly after your jab before leaving. Most people are out of the door within ten minutes.

NHS Flu Jab Eligibility Criteria

The NHS provides free flu vaccinations to people who are most at risk. You may be eligible if you:

If you are unsure whether you qualify, speak to our pharmacist or check with your GP.

Private Service

Private Flu Vaccine Eligibility Criteria

We offer private flu vaccinations for all adults eighteen and older. If you require protection for younger individuals, please consult our pharmacy staff regarding NHS requirements or other available choices. There are no complex criteria. If you want protection, you can get it.

This includes working-age adults, people returning from or travelling internationally, and those who simply want peace of mind going into winter.

What To Expect

What to Expect During Your Flu Vaccination? Consultation

We keep consultations short and clinical. The pharmacist will check your medical history and any current medications to confirm there are no contraindications. This is routine and protects your safety.

You will be seated comfortably and the injection will be given into the upper arm. The injectable flu vaccine contains inactivated virus and cannot cause flu. The nasal spray vaccine (used for eligible children) contains a weakened live virus, which also cannot cause flu but works slightly differently.

If you have an egg allergy or have previously reacted to a flu vaccine, let us know when you book. Egg-free vaccine options are available, and our pharmacist will advise on the best option for you.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a flu jab if I am currently unwell?

If you have a high temperature or are acutely unwell, it is best to wait until you have recovered. A minor cold or sniffles is not a reason to delay your flu jab.

Your body generally needs around 10 to 14 days to build full protection after vaccination. Getting jabbed early in the season gives you the best coverage.

Yes, in most cases. The flu jab can be given alongside other vaccinations, including Covid boosters, without reducing effectiveness. Our pharmacist will confirm this during your consultation.

No. The vaccines used in the UK contain inactivated virus particles, which means they cannot cause infection. Any mild symptoms after your jab, like a slight temperature, are just your immune system responding normally.

Yes. Flu strains change each year, and immunity from previous vaccines fades. The vaccine is updated annually to match the strains most likely to circulate that winter, so yearly vaccination is recommended.
