The New Medicines Service (NMS) is a free NHS programme available at pharmacies across England. It supports patients who have recently been prescribed a new medicine for a long-term condition.
Research shows that many patients stop taking new medicines within the first few weeks. This often happens due to side effects, confusion about dosing, or simply not feeling confident about what the medicine is doing.
The NMS exists to fix that. A pharmacist checks in with you at key stages, answers your questions, and helps you stay on track safely.
You’re eligible for the NMS if you’ve been started on a new medicine for one of the conditions below. We’ll usually enrol you when you pick up your prescription.
Newly prescribed inhalers or other respiratory medicines for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
New oral or injectable treatments for managing blood glucose in type 2 diabetes.
New antihypertensive medicines prescribed to bring high blood pressure under control.
New cholesterol-lowering medicines such as statins, prescribed for elevated blood lipid levels.
Newly prescribed medicines to protect bone density and reduce fracture risk.
New urate-lowering or anti-inflammatory medicines prescribed for the management of gout.
New eye drops or medicines prescribed to reduce intraocular pressure and protect vision.
New dopaminergic or other treatments started for Parkinson’s symptoms.
New bladder medicines prescribed for overactive bladder or urinary retention.
New medicines such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, or diuretics started for heart failure management.
New antiplatelet, anticoagulant, or other cardiac medicines following an acute coronary event.
New rate-control, rhythm-control, or anticoagulant medicines for AF management.
New anticoagulant medicines prescribed to reduce ongoing VTE risk.
New antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicines started following a stroke or TIA.
New medicines prescribed for ongoing coronary artery disease management.
New antidepressant medicines, including SSRIs and SNRIs, for moderate to severe depression.
Not sure whether your medicine qualifies? Call us or pop into the pharmacy and we will check for you.
Many patients leave their GP appointment unsure about why a medicine has been prescribed. Your NMS consultation gives you space to ask questions and get clear answers about what the medicine does.
Side effects are one of the main reasons people stop taking new medicines early. Your pharmacist talks through what to expect and what to do if something does not feel right.
When you understand your treatment, you are far more likely to stick with it. Regular check-ins through the NMS help you build confidence and routine around your new medication.
Catching issues early matters. Problems like incorrect dosing, missed interactions, or unnecessary medicines can often be spotted and resolved before they cause harm.
You do not need a GP appointment. You can speak directly with your pharmacist, either in person or by phone, at a time that suits you.
The NMS runs across three appointments. Each one is short, focused, and completely free.
When you collect your new prescription from Landsdowne Pharmacy, your pharmacist identifies whether you are eligible for the NMS. If you are, you are enrolled at the point of dispensing. This initial stage takes no more than five minutes and sets up your next consultation.
This is your first full consultation. It takes place seven to 14 days after you begin taking your new medicine. Your pharmacist checks how you are getting on, addresses any concerns, and confirms you are taking the medicine correctly. This appointment typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes and can take place in person or over the phone.
Your final follow-up takes place 14 to 21 days after the second appointment. Your pharmacist reviews your progress, checks whether you have experienced any ongoing issues, and confirms whether any further action is needed. This session usually takes around 10 minutes.
Your consultations are private, relaxed, and structured around your needs. Here is what to expect.
Your pharmacist asks how you have been feeling since starting the medicine. This helps build a picture of how your body is responding.

Timing, food interactions, and method of administration all affect how well a medicine works. Your pharmacist goes through this clearly.

If you have forgotten a dose or are unsure what to do when you miss one, your pharmacist gives you straightforward guidance specific to your medicine.

You discuss any symptoms you have noticed. Your pharmacist helps you distinguish between common expected effects and anything that needs attention.

Some medicines work better alongside specific lifestyle changes. Your pharmacist may advise on diet, alcohol, physical activity, or anything else relevant to your treatment.
All NMS consultations take place in a private consultation room. What you discuss stays between you and your pharmacist.
